Demand Forecasting of a First-Tier Supplier in Automotive Industry Using Nonlinear Autoregressive Network with Parsimonious Variables
Abstract
This research developed a nonlinear autoregressive exogenous network (NARX) model to accurately predict part demands for automotive suppliers, reducing carrying costs and preventing stockouts.
- The Challenge: Accurate demand forecasting is compulsory for a first-tier supplier to determine an optimal amount of parts to produce. Overproducing leads to unnecessary carrying costs, while underproducing harms industry relationships.
- The Solution: A NARX model utilizing a parsimonious set of external variables (provisional demand order and the number of non-working days), determined by analyzing autocorrelation functions.
- The Results: The proposed NARX model outperformed an ARIMA model, showing an 18% improvement in training RMSE and a 15% improvement in testing RMSE based on a year of supplier data.
